We left Virginia with three weeks to get to Elkhart Lake in Wisconsin. Where are we going next? We didn’t know and a lot of times we plan as we go. In this case we had hoped to stay in the Smokey Mountains of West Virginia. Our first day of driving ended in Fort Chiswell. We’ve stayed here before and I knew there was a place to get the oil change done on Ralphie. So, after a rainy night, we drove to over and got a 30,000 mile checkup and fluid change. I had an oil analysis done just to make sure everything is good. From there we wanted to have a short day of driving into West Virginia and find a place to stay. Problem was we couldn’t find any place that we could fit in and had an a space. We ended up in a Wal-Mart parking lot. The next day we struck out again on finding a campground and decided to head to Ohio. We took mostly backroads and it was a nice drive. We decided to stay in Lexington at a campground that was part of a Church Meeting area founded in 1860. We were told no smoking, drinking or dancing. Ok I made up the dancing part, and we noticed that the campground host drove around in his golf cart smoking up a storm, so I don’t know how much they enforced the rules. The campground was quiet, and a great place to stay while making a quick drive up to Pickerington. The AMA headquarters and the Motorcycling Hall of Fame are located there. We stopped in and since we knew a few people there (thanks to Ken and Bill) we got the VIP treatment and tour.
We spent a bit of time in the Museum checking out the bikes. On Friday it we decided to head north into Michigan, with plans to drive up to Mackinac and then down the upper peninsula to Road America. In one 370 mile day we went from running the A/C in order to stay cool, to needing the furnace in the chilly temps. We have jumped ahead of spring. We are in Au Gres along lake Huron while we wait for spring to catch up, or next Friday.
